In almost every employee satisfaction survey, meetings score near the bottom.

It does not have to be like that

My philosophy around smarter meetings is encapsulated in my unique 3GN model.
The Greatest Good for the Greatest Number

The 3GN model increases engagement and buy-in

Let me guess. Many of you find the whole meetings merry-go-round frustrating. That’s probably why you’re reading this. Well, I used to feel that way too.

You want to attend better meetings, but know it will be too hard to tackle suggesting any positive changes as it’s such a complex situation. All the different viewpoints result in conflicting ideas of what’s right and what’s wrong. You’re probably thinking, “it’s too hard to make changes that will have a long-term difference, and I’ve got too much other work to do.”

So you go with the meeting flow instead. Trouble is, it’s not a flow at all. Instead it’s like being on a bus on the circular route that you want to get off but can’t. And worse, it stops at every bus stop to pick up new passengers but none can hop off.

Some are loud and won’t stop talking. Others keep throwing in curve balls that have nothing to do with the discussion, wasting everyone’s time. You’re annoyed as you’ve got so much real work to do, but you’re trapped in an endless loop of meetings.

When I first sat on committees and board meetings with different associations, I experienced this first-hand. I thought, surely there’s got to be a better way. So I decided to learn what you should do, and what you shouldn’t do in meetings. After all, meetings shouldn’t be that hard.

Fortunately, I had a great start with my meetings learning journey. Rostrum taught formal meeting procedure skills within their regular public speaking meetings. When Rostrum first began, these skills were handed down from generation to generation. That’s just the way it was. I was very lucky to have had this opportunity to learn from the masters, becoming a master myself.

I must admit, I’m a bit nerdy about process. I mean, on my days off you’ll find me in the law courts listening to the technical procedures of a case or in parliament following the debate – weird I know, but also fascinating. All those twists and turns to navigate.

This is how I found my calling. My mission now is Smarter Meetings that get results and save time. Because we should only spend as much time as we need to in meetings. Not a minute more.
