Sound familiar?

Your name gets called. Your mouth goes dry.

For many people, standing up to speak is one of life’s biggest fears. It rarely happens on a big stage. It shows up in ordinary moments like these.

Introducing yourself at a networking event
Speaking up in a team meeting
A wedding or birthday speech
Presenting a report at work
Your first committee or club meeting
A job interview
Asking a question at a public forum
Simply sharing your ideas

Some people come to me because they have a speech next week. Others have spent years avoiding every chance to speak. Both are equally worthwhile.

Four stages to becoming a confident speaker ©

The goal isn’t to get rid of fear. It’s to walk through it.

This is the map I use with every nervous speaker. Tap the zone that sounds most like you.

You’re in the Fear Zone. This is where most people start with me. We don’t bulldoze through it. We turn fear from a foe into an uncomfortable friend, and then into an ally. The Fear Zone is only a few steps wide.

Fear isn’t your enemy

Fear is excitement wearing a disguise.

Every great speaker has felt it. The difference is they learned what to do with it. Public speaking ranks among our greatest fears, yet speaking up is one of the most powerful skills you can have in your career, your community and your life.

Five minutes of discomfort

Will the first few minutes feel uncomfortable? Probably. But exercise is easier once you’ve started, and conversation flows once you’re talking. Speaking works the same way.

The cost of staying silent

The opportunities you miss by avoiding those five minutes are the ones that sting. Every time you choose to speak instead of staying quiet, you grow.

Made, not born

Great speakers aren’t born that way. They’re made through practice, guidance and experience. I’ve watched it happen hundreds of times.

Hear it from me

Simon Pritchard talks public speaking with David

Nervous speakers often want to know who they’ll be working with before they pick up the phone. Here’s a conversation with Simon Pritchard about public speaking, so you can hear how I think before we ever meet.

How we work

Confidence first. Then the skills.

The art of speaking is relatively easy to teach. Having the confidence to use it is the key. So that’s where we start, and we build from there one layer at a time.

  1. Confidence

    Getting you on your feet

Exercises that get you standing in front of people, finding your voice, and discovering you have more to offer than you’ve given yourself credit for.

  2. Physiology

How you look when you speak

Your stance, hands, eyes, voice and energy. Once you know you look confident, you start to feel it.

  3. Design

    Knowing what you’ll say

Organising your thoughts so there’s a clear start, middle and end, and you’re not clinging to your notes.

  4. Delivery

    Bringing it together

Pace, pausing, stories and presence. You, speaking as yourself, only more so.

Every session has the same rhythm:
I demonstrate.
You practise.
I coach.

It’s personal, practical and paced for you. And it works fast.

What happens when it clicks

From frozen to a standing ovation

Marlene

Marlene had been avoiding her fear of public speaking for months. When the day came, she froze in front of a room full of colleagues. She couldn’t say a word.

Fifteen minutes of on-the-spot coaching later, she was speaking confidently. Her colleagues leant forward and laughed along. She got a standing ovation.

A colleague said it best: David freed her from the feeling that she’d never be good enough.

Kyle Saltmarsh

Kyle had one coaching session with me the week before the Young Person’s World Lecture Competition in South Africa.

He went on to win the world final. He counts it among his proudest achievements.

One session. The right few changes. A world title.

“David can be direct, but in the nicest way that actually makes you feel really good. Because you know he’s doing it because he wants you to be the best that you can be.”

Elevate your confidence

You know your stuff. But does your audience know that?

You’ve earned your seat at the table. The experience, the knowledge, the runs on the board. But if you don’t project confidence when you speak, none of that matters. People don’t just listen to your words. They read you: every pause, every gesture, every flicker of uncertainty. In the boardroom, on the stage or in the meeting room, confidence isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s your currency.

Confidence isn’t something you’re born with. It’s a skill. It can be learned, practised and mastered.

For more than four decades I’ve helped executives, leaders and professionals walk taller. Not just look more confident, but genuinely feel it. From the boardrooms of Qantas to conference stages in Dubai, I’ve seen what happens when someone unlocks their true presence. It changes everything.

The Three V’s

Confidence works on three levels

  • Verbal. The words you choose. Clear, direct and compelling, or hedged and over-explained?
  • Vocal. Pace, pitch, pause and power. Your voice is an instrument. Most people never learn to play it.
  • Visual. Posture, eye contact, movement. Your audience judges before you say a word.

When all three align, you don’t just sound confident. You are confident.

The Trust Triangle

Confidence without credibility is just noise

  • Credibility. Do they believe you know what you’re talking about?
  • Connection. Do they feel you understand them?
  • Congruity. Do your words, voice and presence all tell the same story?

When all three work together, trust is automatic. And trust is where influence begins.

The Three F’s

Confidence in the room, under pressure

  • Fairness. Treating every voice with equal respect, including your own.
  • Firmness. Holding your position with conviction, without aggression.
  • Focus. Keeping yourself and the room on track, even when it gets heated.

These aren’t just communication tools. They’re leadership tools.

One-to-one confidence coaching

You don’t need a personality overhaul. You need practical, proven techniques that work in your world. Coaching is tailored to you: your strengths, your gaps, your goals. We work at your pace, on your schedule, with tools you can use immediately. No fluff. No theory for theory’s sake.

Your coach

The short guy who helps you WALK TALL

I’m David Julian Price. I first stood up to speak at Rostrum in Perth in 1980, and public speaking has been my profession ever since.

My job isn’t to change your personality or teach you to perform. It’s to help you get comfortable speaking as yourself. When you stop worrying about looking nervous, you can focus on connecting with your audience. That’s when speaking becomes enjoyable.

Some of the people I’ve coached have gone on to speak on international stages. Others simply wanted to feel comfortable at work or in their community. Watching both discover they really can do it is the best part of my job.
